{"id":16,"date":"2011-06-13T15:09:09","date_gmt":"2011-06-13T20:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/help.paulschwake.com\/?page_id=16"},"modified":"2011-06-14T11:44:39","modified_gmt":"2011-06-14T16:44:39","slug":"pc-maintenance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/help.paulschwake.com\/?page_id=16","title":{"rendered":"PC maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following\u00a0will help keep a Windows computer running smoothly for years to come and most cost you nothing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have plenty of RAM &#8211; at least 1GB for XP and 2GB for Vista or Windows 7.<\/li>\n<li>Use the built-in Windows maintenance tools (e.g. Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Disk Error-checking).<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t let the drive where Windows is installed have less than 10% free space.\u00a0 If it falls below that, it&#8217;s time to start uninstalling programs or moving data.<\/li>\n<li>If you use Internet Explorer, delete cookies and history on a regular basis. Configure Internet Explorer for 256MB of temporary files and also configure it to empty temporary files when the browser is closed.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure to stay current with Windows updates.<\/li>\n<li>Uninstall any software that is not used.\u00a0 Do this properly through <strong>Add or Remove Programs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t install any unnecessary hardware or software.<\/li>\n<li>Reboot the computer on a regular basis.<\/li>\n<li>Keep all vents clear of obstructions.\u00a0 Check fans regularly to verify that they are functioning correctly and replace any that are not.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the tips under my Malware\u00a0section.<\/li>\n<li><em>Stay away from any &#8220;registry cleaner&#8221; type programs.\u00a0 All it takes is one incorrect registry &#8220;clean up&#8221; and your system could be<strong> damaged beyond repair. <\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following\u00a0will help keep a Windows computer running smoothly for years to come and most cost you nothing: Have plenty of RAM &#8211; at least 1GB for XP and 2GB for Vista or Windows 7.
